Furikake Chex Mix

Updated: Dec 29, 2020

A sweet snack food that's very popular in Hawaii, using multiple types of cereal and other snacks. It's also very adjustable, as one can put in additional types of cereal or snacks they like (or take out ones they don't like).

Since it's best to make in large batches, it's recommended to share with a group.

The recipe below is a version I did, although me and my family personally don't like the honeycomb (too sweet), so we just substituted it for goldfish. I still put it down in the recipe, but it's your choice of what to include and exclude. We also added another bottle of furikake for good measure.

Also, you can adjust the amount so you don't have to make a mountain of snacks.

Ingredients

1 box wheat chex

1 box rice chex

1 box corn chex

1 box honeycomb

2 bags bugles

1 bag pretzels

2 bags goldfish

1 cup butter

1/2 cup corn syrup

1/2 cup sugar

2/3 cup vegetable oil

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 bottle furikake

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F Mix selected snacks and divide into 2-3 pans evenly (the rectangular, foil kind).

  2. For the syrup, melt the butter in a saucepan, then add in the corn syrup, sugar, vegetable oil, and soy sauce. Stir until fully mixed.

  3. Pour syrup over chex mix between the pans. Toss the mix with spoons or spatulas to evenly coat the mix.

  4. Sprinkle in the furikake and stir.

  5. Place in oven and bake for 1 hour, taking the mixture out every 15 minutes to stir.

  6. Remove from oven and let cool. Divide chex mix into containers to share.
