Ozoni is a Japanese traditional dish typically eaten for new years! There are lots of varieties of this dish, since each region has its own unique ozoni. The one I’m introducing here is a recipe used by my mom :)
My grandma actually uses yellowtail instead of chicken because she’s a rich lady, but I have gathered the most accessible ingredients in SLO. I just wanted to make it because I found out they sell taro roots in SLO!
Ready in: 20 minutes
Serves: 3-4 people
Difficulty: easy
Ingredients
Daikon (¼ -½)
Taro root (3)
Carrot (1)
Chicken (thigh preferred, 150g)
Water (800ml)
Dashi powder (10g)
Sake (1 tbsp)
Soy sauce (2 tbsp)
Mochi (3-4)
Cooking steps
Cut up all the ingredients to biteable sizes
Put chicken, water, and sake in a pot and bring to boil on medium heat
Once it’s boiled, skim the excess oil with a ladle and add the vegetables
Once it’s boiled, add soy sauce and dashi powder and take it off heat
Toast the mochi (or be lazy like me and just microwave them…)
Put the cooked mochi in the soup and you’re done! :))
