Tofu is becoming more common in grocery stores these days. So I wanted to share some ideas on what you can do with a block of tofu!
For example, hiyayakko is an easy way to enjoy a block of silken tofu. Here, I used soy sauce and cut green onions. (I also put katsuobushi for more flavor). It's very light and a good emergency meal.
But you can put any type of flavoring or toppings on your tofu! Just try things and see what you like.
As for another easy tofu dish, there is also agedashi tofu. It is fried tofu that you can eat with a sauce or dashi broth. I recommend trying something with the ingredients that you have!
Agedashi tofu
Ingredients
a block of silken or medium firm tofu
cornstarch or potato starch
cooking oil (you will need enough to fill half of your frying pan)
Sauce (dashi broth)
1 cup water
2 teaspoons of dashi powder
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons soy sauce (add more if it doesn't taste salty enough)
Prep
What you need:
1 plate
1 container for breading tofu
frying pan
tongs or cooking chopstick
Making the dashi broth:
Heat the water on medium high heat
Add dashi, sugar, and soy sauce altogether
Stir until the sugar and dashi dissolve
Steps
1. Cut up the block of tofu into squares (try to pat it dry with a paper towel)
2. Fill your frying pan halfway with oil and heat it up to medium heat,
3. Bread the tofu with your starch (cornstarch or potato starch)
4. Fry the tofu on one side for 4 minutes, or until it turns golden brown
5. Fry on the other side 3 minutes, or before tofu begins to turn dark brown or black
6. Remove tofu from oil and serve with sauce or broth. And you're done!
I made mine with the dashi broth and put green onion and grated daikon on top. A more flavorful way to eat it is using a ponzu soy sauce mix or your favorite sauce for eating fried food.
And that's it! Enjoy and don't forget there are a lot of fun ways to eat tofu (tofu is pretty nutritious and a great meat substitute). Enjoy and have fun cooking!
